Curl up in a cozy corner with a fall scented candle ablaze. (I’m currently burning this mulled apple cider candle, and wow, it is so dreamy). It’s fall, and your dark soul is craving to spend your nights reading spooky novels, more than usual. While this is not an exhaustive list, it is full of books I have been reading lately. Certainly, many of my readers are bound to be literature lovers and already familiar with these novels. However, if not, I’m here to welcome those of you to some spectacularly bleak and dreary prose. This is not an exhaustive list. Simply a few recommendations that I wanted to share and I have been enjoying lately. However, none of these are scary, but rather creepy.
- Ninth House, Leigh Bardugo — ghosts, ghosts, ghosts. I am currently listening to an audiobook and getting caught up in the richness of this gothic academia world.
- The Mysteries of Udolpho, Ann Radcliffe — I recently started this one, and the protagonist’s name is also Emily. I keep highlighting sentences of eloquent, dark mystery.
- The Turn of the Screw, Henry James — Governess, ghosts, creepy children. We all love these great elements. It’s like the Secret Garden gone dark.
- The Haunting of Hill House, Shirley Jackson — Would you stay in a haunted house? I definitely would not want to.
- The Picture of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde — Ties supernatural horrors and art, which are two things I love. A classic spooky novel for a reason.
- Gideon the Ninth, Tamsyn Muir — Necromancy, sword fighting, and spaceships. I devoured this in a few days and stayed up far past my bedtime. If you’ve read this, read the second in the series, Harrow the Ninth.
